On August 10, 2021, in a matter of minutes, a hacker managed to transfer $610 million worth of cryptocurrency to three accounts. The community panicked; it was the largest cryptocurrency theft in history.

While security teams were tracing the wallets, a transaction appeared on the blockchain. It came from the attacker himself. The message read:

"I'm ready to return the funds. This isn't about money. It's about exposing a vulnerability before someone really bad finds it."

The community began calling him "Mr. White Hat," referring to ethical hackers who look for vulnerabilities to help, not to harm.

In the following hours, the hacker posted these statements:

"I didn't do this for money. Doing something so 'cool' that everyone's talking about it... makes me feel like a hero. But stealing $600 million isn't something to brag about. Exposing the vulnerability before others exploit it... that's something."

"I realized that thousands of people would lose control of their destinies if I didn't return the money. That went against my personal philosophy."

"If you acquire weapons anonymously and protect billions of people from the mob, do you become a terrorist or Batman?"

Mr. White Hat returned all the money within the next two weeks; users didn't lose a single dollar.

Polynetwork didn't file any charges against the hacker and instead offered him a reward of $500,000 and the position of chief security advisor. The hacker accepted the reward, but it's unknown whether he accepted the position, as he never revealed his identity.
