Casinos and gambling have not been far removed from the fascinating world of cinema. Many films have depicted the lives of individuals, families, or groups of people who experience a period of great fortune after poverty, winning either a lottery prize or one of the major jackpots on slot machines or casinos, and their lives were transformed from poverty to wealth, from hardship to comfort and the highest levels of luxury. From these films, we can mention a long list of them:
It Could Happen to You (1994)
Vegas Vacation (1997)
Waking Ned Devine (1998)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)
Welcome to Me (2014)
Jerry and Marge Go Large (2022)
Jackpot! (2024)
But today we are reviewing one of the enjoyable films that deals with the issue of online gambling, it is the film (Runner Runner) directed by Brad Furman and produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. The stars are Batman, Ben Affleck, Justin Timberlake (Batman's loyal friend), and Gemma Arterton.
The film tells the story of Richie, a top graduate student at Princeton University, who works as a "middleman," bringing students to online gambling sites to pay his tuition. When threatened with expulsion, he decides to bet all his savings (around $18,000) on online poker on the site of gambling king Evan Block. Richie loses everything in moments, but his mathematical acumen leads him to discover a "loophole" or technical manipulation in the site's algorithms that caused his loss.
Richie travels to Costa Rica to confront billionaire Ivan. He finds him at a lavish party and confronts him with evidence of fraud on his website. Ivan returns his money and offers him a job with an astronomical salary to work for him in his empire. Richie accepts Ivan's offer and works for him until he discovers Ivan's true nature.
Federal agent Shave appears, kidnaps Richie, and tries to pressure him into spying on Ivan. But Ivan threatens to kill him if he betrays him, while Shave threatens him with life imprisonment if he does not cooperate with him. Richie then discovers that Ivan is planning to make him bear legal responsibility for all of the site's financial crimes. Richie bribes local officials to work for him.
Eventually Evan tries to escape in his private plane with millions of dollars, only to discover that the pilot has been bribed by Richie to land him in an area under US jurisdiction for his arrest.
The film deals with the dangers that surround us when our ambitions get out of hand as we seek to make money easily and quickly.
