Weep Not, Child
Weep Not, Child is a novel written by African novelist and a post colonial writer Ngugi Wa Thiongo. He lived in Kenya that falls in African region. He experienced the era of colonialism and been one of those effected ones. Basically, influences of British has covered most of the part, and the tradition to the way of praying across their region changed. As a result, they left using their names and named themselves those of Englishman. Ngugi Wa Thiongo was known as James Thiongo and after getting really known to the mind of Britishers he changed his name.
Weep Not, Child is generally known go be his first work in the world of African and post colonial Literature. The book was written when he was a student in one of the universities run by Britishers. The book entirely covers a true picture of white man and their capturing in the region. He showed how Britishers as the name of development and help for the World War 1 and 2 came and later they acquired their land. Not only this, they made the local work in their own lands as workers to feed foreign settlers.
Thiongo described all those effects of a colonial mind, its main purpose and tactics for capturing a land. There were many tools he described in the fictional writing, as one and the most useful is Religion. To make it stronger, an African novelist Chinua Achebe narrates in his novel "Things Fall Apar" that White man came, they had the Bible and African had the land, later, they gave the Bible and took the land, now Africans have the Bible and White men have their Land.
All that Thiongo believed was education to get their land back from them. He showed the importance of education in many of the chapters when the African child, Njoroge: the main character feels thirsty for knowledge to learn how to get back their land. Hope has been one of the main themes of it, because Njoroge's father does work in place of his father on the same land till he dies just with the hope that one-day they, The Britishers, would leave the land forever.
Colonizers use a nation's people to make them totally theirs and get help from them for acquirng more land or keeping the natives distracted. For the purposes, they facilitate all those people who work for them. And in the novel, one of the devil characters, belonged to their land, was richest person in the region.
To sum up, the novel really has a capturing tone and the tone of anger for the colonizers. One who suffers can understand it better and know what go do. All the Thiongo wanted to share, is the colonial tactics and those of the ways to prevent them! Whether that comes out of bloodshed or silently.
