Many illnesses are not actually illnesses, but a natural part of aging. A hospital director gave this advice to elderly people:
You are not sick, you are getting older.
Many conditions that you think are diseases are not diseases. They are signs of your body growing older.
*1. Weak memory is not necessarily Alzheimer’s.*
It’s the brain’s protective way as it ages. It’s a sign of an aging brain, not a disease. If you put your keys somewhere and forget, but later find them yourself, that is not dementia.
*2. Walking slowly and unsteady legs or feet are not a stroke.*
It’s muscle weakness. The solution is not medicine, but staying active and moving regularly.
*3. Insomnia is not a disease, but a change in the brain’s routine.*
Sleep patterns change with age. Don’t rely on sleeping pills. Long-term use increases the risk of falls and mental decline. For elderly people, the best treatment for good sleep is getting sunlight during the day and keeping a regular sleep-wake schedule.
*4. Body aches and pains are not necessarily arthritis.*
It’s a natural response of the aging nervous system. Many elderly people say: “My hands and feet hurt all the time, is this arthritis or a bone disease?” Bones do get weaker, but 99% of body pain is not a disease. It’s because nerves slow down with age, so pain is felt more. This is called _central sensitization_ — a common physical change in aging. The treatment is exercise, not medicine.
*5. Slightly higher cholesterol is not always dangerous.*
Elderly people may have slightly higher cholesterol because they have lived longer. Cholesterol is essential for making hormones and cell membranes. If cholesterol gets too low, immunity can be affected.
Similarly, an acceptable blood pressure for elderly people can be up to 150/90 mmHg, while for younger people it’s 140/90. Don’t treat aging like a disease.
*6. Aging is not a disease.*
It is an inevitable journey of life that should be enjoyed as long as possible.
---
*A few things for elderly people and their children:*
1. Remember that not every ache is an illness.
2. Many elderly people live in fear. Don’t be intimidated by medical reports or advertisements.
3. The most important thing children can do is not just take parents to the hospital, but also walk with them, sit with them in the sun, eat meals together, talk with them, and maintain the relationship.
Aging is not the enemy. It is actually saying:
_“I want to live a little longer.”_
But laziness and inactivity are the real enemies. Stay healthy.

*A cancer doctor said:*
1. Middle age: 50 to 70 years
2. Golden years: 70 to 80 years
3. Old age: 80 to 90 years
4. Longevity: 90 years and beyond until the end of life
The biggest problem for elderly people is loneliness. Husbands and wives usually don’t pass away together. One goes first. Then at some point the widow or widower starts feeling like a burden on the family. That’s why it’s very important to stay in touch with friends, meet, and keep talking so a person doesn’t feel alone.
*My personal opinion:*
Don’t lose control of your own life. Decide for yourself when and with whom to go out, what to eat, what to wear, who to call, when to sleep, what to read, how to have fun, what to buy, and where to live.
Because if a person can’t do all this freely, they become a burden on others.
