Over at the Windice chat, we've got all sorts of people mixing it up. You've got your chill ones, your loud ones, the deep thinkers, the jokesters... and on top of that, we're coming from all over the map different countries, different cultures, different ways of seeing life. With that kind of cocktail, it's only natural that every now and then we rub each other the wrong way, or just don't click on certain things. Hey, we're human, right? That's what makes it interesting. And that's fine. But hey not agreeing with someone isn't an excuse to be disrespectful or bring a bad attitude.
Because on the other side of the screen, there's a real person, not a robot. Sometimes, when we type fast, we forget that our words can actually hurt. A joke that seems harmless to us might rub someone else the wrong way especially if we keep repeating it or it starts feeling like a personal dig. So taking a second to pause before hitting "send" never hurts.
Just to be clear, being respectful doesn't mean you have to get along with everyone or agree all the time. We can argue, have totally different opinions, and even get upset about something specific but there's no need for insults, provocation, or personal attacks.
In the Windice chat, showing respect is easier than it seems, avoid insults, don't constantly pick on anyone, stop when someone asks you to knock it off with something that bothers them, and don't stir up drama over nonsense. It's also basic not to discriminate or single anyone out because of their country, language, way of speaking, or any other difference. Idioms can be wise or funny, but they should never be a disguise for offending someone. When people use them to hurt others indirectly, what they're really showing is a lack of courage to have an honest conversation.
And this goes for the mods and the people trying to keep order in the chat too. We might not always like a decision they make and that's understandable, but you can always voice that politely. There's no need to throw out an insult or blow things out of proportion just to show you disagree. At the end of the day, when you're respectful, people actually listen better.
The community is built by all of us, with every single message we send. A comment can make someone's day or it can cause a whole mess. So before you type, a good question to ask yourself is would i like it if someone said this to me?
