Phishing is a cybercrime used by hackers and scammers to steal and reveal personal data such as usernames, passwords, bank account informations and etc.It is carried out through text messages and emails mainly.
This term first appeared in 1995 when AOHell (windows application used for computer hacking) came into being and since then it has shown up in several ways. However, the most essential phase of security alerts against phishing started during 2017-2020 when phishing attacks among businesses rose around 72-86%.
Phishing is directed in several ways including emails, voicemails, SMS, quishing and many more. The most common among phishing is the email phishing where usually emails are sent through high estimated profiles like banks and trusted committees trying to gain your personal information. They sent out emails like email account updates, Google docs scams, bank accounts scams and the rest of other things.
Moreover, I have personally come across phishing through SMS (also called smishing) , where on the usual basis I receive cash prize claim messages, huge discount/ sale messages which are very commonly trusted.
There are several other phishing types based on what audiences they attack and how. Some common ones and their precautions to stay away from attacks are listed here:
1harming: This is one way of phishing where users are redirected to fake websites this is usually because attackers use similar domains and create mirror images of original websites which are usually hard to detect by the users.
So it is very important to check the veracity of websites before entering any sensitive information
2:Whaling: This is a very dangerous phishing where the target audience is very high esteemed person that could a decision maker in a business or an organisation. This is carried out through SMS or emails through trusted parties and aims to reveal any next move the organisation is about to take ,or trading details from business and disrupt the working system in the respected business or organisation.
One way to secure the system is to educate the seniors about certain attacks so they do not fall into the trap of the attackers.
3: Angler Phishing: This is one more common type of phishing which comes from social media like Instagram, facebook and X. The phisher usually make fake profiles using esteemed logos and send out messages that have inconvenient links. Third type of phishing is carried out to get your login credentials and account details.
It is important to keep yourself safe from certain attacks for which your can use better security and two-factor authentication and do not click on any link untill you believe their authenticity.
These are common types of phishing that people fall in trap of. Besides this, the people that get victims of phishing are usually elderly people that do not understand modern day technology and its security alerts.
My personal advice to keep yourself safe from Phishing:
-Always use two-factor authentication for better security.
- Educate yourself about certain scammers and cybercrime.
- Avoid giving your personal information before you understand the authenticity in the process.
- Avoid using public WiFi.
- Keep your software updated always.
