Whenever you use the internet, online apps or anything connected to internet, your device sends data in the form of small packets . If the connection is not secured or encrypted, attackers may be able to steal some of these packets . While they usually can't see encrypted information but they can see which websites you visit or what apps you use and when you use them.
Hotels airportsand restaurants may offer legitimate and secure free Wifi, but attackers can also create fake networks with the same or a very similar name as the real one . Many people connect without thinking twice, and any unencrypted data they send can be collected. In some cases attackers may even redirect users to fake login or payment pages to steal sensitive information such as passwords or card details.
This is especially important for those who use cryptocurrencies. If you log in to your exchange account or access your wallet while connected to an unknown public Wi-Fi network , you could put your funds at risk. Even if your wallet itself remains secure, fake login pages and phishing attacks or unknown unwanted downloads can still lead to serious loss.
Sohow can you stay safe?
-First of all avoid connecting to free Wifi unless it's really necessary.
- If you do need to use it, don't log in to important accounts or exchanges or crypto wallets . -Using a trusted VPN while using public Wifi is also a good idea
-Definitely enable 2FA. This is really important, whether you're using a private network or a public one. Just use it. One of my friends lost 130 USD from a website. We both had funds there. and the only reason he lost his money was because he didn't enable 2FA .
Free Wifi is useful but "free" doesn't always mean "safe"... Saving a little mobile data isn't worth risking your important information.
I know this may sound a little paranoid but the internet is full of threats and people with bad intentions . take care of yourselves and protect your important information.
