Two patients lay in a hospital room. One man was able to sit up, and his bed was positioned right next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend his entire day lying flat on his back. Every afternoon, the man by the window would sit up and describe to his roommate all the things he could see outside.
The second man lived for those moments. Through the descriptions, his world came alive. The window reportedly overlooked a beautiful park with a serene lake where children played with toy boats. The scenery was enchanting. As the man by the window detailed every vibrant color and activity, the bedridden man would close his eyes and imagine the wonderful sights.
One morning, the nurse entered the room only to find that the man by the window had passed away peacefully in his sleep.
After some time, the second man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse complied and, after making him comfortable, left the room. Slowly, and with great effort, the man propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside.
He was stunned to find that the window faced nothing but a blank wall.
Confused, he called the nurse and asked how his late roommate could have described such wonderful things outside that window.
The nurse revealed a heartbreaking truth: The man was actually blind. He couldn't even see the wall, let alone a park.
"Perhaps," she said softly, "he just wanted to encourage you and give you a reason to live."
There is no greater joy than setting aside your own pain to bring happiness to others. Joy increases when shared. Try to be a reason for someone’s smile and make this world a better place.
