It’s curious that during the simplest and most everyday activities of our day, we are always accompanied—even when we are alone. For me in particular, and I know for many of those taking a few minutes to read this article, music is the perfect companion to make any kind of activity more enjoyable. Let’s forget genres and subgenres. Let’s forget whether it’s danceable, instrumental, heavy, or simple. The reality is that it is music, and for many of us it even accompanies us when falling asleep. We know we enjoy it, we know what it triggers in us. But do we really know what it is?
Without a doubt, music is one of the deepest and most universal artistic expressions created by humanity. We can try to define it in technical terms, but many of the greatest composers of all time have preferred to describe it through experience and emotion.
For Ludwig van Beethoven, music was “a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy.” Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart conceived it as a language that allows us to “speak with the soul.” And Claude Debussy stated that music is “the space between the notes,” highlighting that silence is also an essential part of it.
From these ideas, we can understand that music is not merely an ordered sequence of sounds, but a form of communication that goes beyond the verbal. In its most basic definition, music is the art of organizing sounds and silences in time, creating structures that transmit emotions, ideas, or sensations. These sounds may come from the human voice, musical instruments, or even natural elements, but what turns them into music is the intention with which they are organized.
However, reducing music to a technical definition would be missing the point. Its true power lies in its ability to connect with human experience. Music can awaken memories we thought were forgotten, change our mood in a matter of seconds, or accompany us in moments of loneliness, joy, sadness, or reflection. It is a form of emotional language that needs no translation.
Are you going to the gym? — Music motivates you.
Are you going for a walk? — Music accompanies you.
Are you going to study? — Music helps learning.
Are you feeling depressed? — Music helps you heal.
In addition, music plays a fundamental role in culture and society. Through it, people have transmitted stories, beliefs, and identities. Every era and every region of the world has developed its own musical styles, reflecting its way of understanding life. From classical compositions to modern genres, music evolves alongside humanity, adapting to its changes and needs.
In conclusion, and in my personal opinion, music is much more than organized sounds—it is pure living memory. It is one of the few expressions capable of synthesizing the rational with the emotional, the individual with the collective, and even the present with what is no longer here...
