French film that blends psychological thriller with elements of visual and sound experimentation. Bonan's film is set in two iconic neighborhoods of 1968 Paris, Pigalle and a Belleville in the midst of demolition (an emblematic setting of French cinema, as seen in Jules et Jim, Casque d'Or), where death seems to lurk around every corner.
La femme bourreau was never released at the time, as its unclassifiable nature as a thriller — tinged with a crime reportage tone mixed with unexpectedly lyrical visual elements reminiscent of Resnais — made it difficult to fit into late 1960s distribution circuits. Its atonal score and unconventional songs of the era further isolated it, ultimately making it a cult film that was only officially released in 2014.

La femme bourreau is not a detective film, although technically it could be seen as one. It is, above all, a film about escape — a constant fleeing from existence, an absurd game that, like a crime chronicle, portrays marginality and unease, filled with sensuality, silences evoking silent cinema, and a visually extravagant polyhedral aesthetic.
