The story began on November 24 1971 when a man using the name Dan Cooper boarded Northwest Orient Flight 305 from Portland to Seattle He looked ordinary dressed in a dark business suit and carrying a briefcase Shortly after takeoff he calmly handed a note to a flight attendant claiming that he had a bomb
Instead of creating panic Cooper remained surprisingly calm He demanded $200,000 in cash four parachutes and a fuel truck waiting in Seattle Authorities agreed to his demands to ensure the safety of the passengers and crew
After the plane landed in Seattle the passengers were released and Cooper received the money and parachutes He then instructed the pilots to fly toward Mexico at a low altitude with the rear staircase lowered Somewhere over the forests of the Pacific Northwest he opened the rear stairs and jumped into the darkness with the ransom money
When the plane landed later Cooper was gone
The FBI launched one of the largest investigations in its history known as NORJAK (Northwest Hijacking) Thousands of suspects were investigated and countless theories emerged Despite years of searching no confirmed trace of Cooper was ever found
In 1980 a young boy discovered nearly $6,000 of the ransom money buried along the Columbia River The serial numbers matched the cash given to Cooper but the discovery only deepened the mystery How the money ended up there remains unknown
Many believe Cooper died during the jump because of the harsh weather difficult terrain and limited skydiving equipment Others think he survived and successfully escaped living the rest of his life under a different identity With no definitive evidence, both theories continue to spark debate
The DB Cooper case has inspired books documentaries films podcasts and countless online discussions It remains one of the most fascinating unsolved mysteries in criminal history because it combines intelligence risk and an ending that no one has been able to explain
More than fifty years later DB Cooper continues to capture the imagination of people around the world Whether he was a skilled criminal a lucky survivor or someone who never made it out of the wilderness his true identity remains one of history greatest unanswered questions
