According to U.S authorities the person behind AlphaBay was Alexandre Cazes, a Canadian national who allegedly operated the marketplace under the online aliases "Alpha02" and "Admin" While living in Thailand he was accused of managing the site's operations and earning substantial income through transaction fees
How Investigators Identified Him
The investigation lasted several years and involved agencies from multiple countries. Prosecutors alleged that one of the earliest clues came from promotional messages posted when AlphaBay first launched Those messages allegedly used an email address that investigators later connected to Alexandre Cazes through his personal online accounts and business activities Authorities also alleged that he reused the online alias "Alpha02" on older internet forums helping investigators connect different pieces of evidence
Investigators combined those leads with financial records, digital evidence cryptocurrency analysis and international cooperation to build their case Rather than relying on a single mistake authorities said they assembled multiple sources of evidence over time before seeking his arrest

On July 5 2017 Thai authorities arrested Alexandre Cazes at his residence in Bangkok on behalf of the United States. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, officers found his laptop open and unsecured at the time of the arrest. Prosecutors said the device contained information that allegedly linked him to AlphaBay's administration
Death and Legacy
While awaiting extradition to the United States, Alexandre Cazes was found dead in his prison cell in Thailand on July 12 2017 Thai authorities ruled his death a suicide. Following the operation AlphaBay's servers were seized and the marketplace was shut down in one of the largest international cybercrime operations ever conducted
