Every end of the year the same thing happens to me: I sit in front of the screen, with something to drink in my hand, watching and listening to all the noise on TV about the promotions for this end of the year and the new year, and I start thinking about these last twelve months that flew by. I kept thinking about the small battles that many carried without saying them out loud.
And I wanted to ask you: what do you expect from the new year? What do you promise, what do you dream of, what do you fear, what are you trying to heal? And even though the story is different for everyone, there is a common truth, and it’s that we want to be a little better than yesterday, even if sometimes we don’t know exactly how to do it.
The curious thing is that, regardless of the country, age, or language, almost everyone mentions the same things:
I want to be calmer.
I want to improve financially.
I want health.
I want to accomplish what I was afraid to start this year.
Many talked about saving, about starting a business, about changing jobs that no longer make them happy. Others only wish to sleep better, breathe better, live better. And even though it sounds simple, sometimes those wishes are the hardest to achieve.
There are promises that no one posts on social media, but they weigh a lot, like continuing forward even when tired, trying again even if it hurts, forgiving ourselves for the mistakes of the year that’s ending.
Someone close to me told me something that stayed with me:
“I don’t want to change the world, I just want to feel like I’m myself again.”
Something many dream of and is hard to achieve today.
Many also set goals that come with fears: fear of not achieving them, of failing again, of the new year becoming a gray copy of the one that ended. But I also found something beautiful, and it’s that most people have more hope than fear. Even if life has hit them, even if their pockets feel tight, even if their plans were delayed, people keep dreaming. And that, to me, is already a small victory.
Every year we remind ourselves that everything lies in our effort, which is not easily seen by others:
The one who smiles is tired.
The one who moves forward has doubts.
The one who motivates others sometimes also needs someone to lift them up.
So then, what do we expect from the new year?
After talking to so many people, after hearing stories full of light and others full of shadows, I think we all want the same thing: a year where things actually work out, where the work pays off, where what we planted finally begins to grow, where we find ourselves with a little more peace, where we can say “this year really was mine.”
So with all my heart, I leave you my wish:
May this new year find you with renewed strength, with a heart aligned with your goals, and with the certainty that what you are looking for is also looking for you.
And may the promise you made to yourself,
even if you say it softly, come true.
