Heir to Akira and Ghost in the Shell, but with primarily 2D French animation, though it features a notable use of 3D as well. Périn's work delves into a not-so-distant future where AI is already an integral part of human society. Two central figures evoke American noir, though the protagonist is a woman—a trendy variation—and her companion is a deceased ex-cop reincarnated as a semi-holographic android. The film revolves around an investigation but also addresses themes such as the evolution of AI, the colonization of Mars, the transcendence of androids, and their aspiration to move beyond biomechanical bodies, among others. The cyberpunk setting depicts a world in a fully artificialized stage, where robotics threaten to replace humans, computers hack consciousness, and private corporations subjugate society—a mimetic amplification of contemporary evils.
With an interesting character design—though perhaps not as much in the art development of settings and props—it compensates with a carefully crafted semi-dystopian futuristic atmosphere, especially in the film's final act. Mars Express is full of those unsettling details of contemporary sci-fi (synthetic sex workers, next-generation memory drugs, organic AIs floating in tanks like brains in formaldehyde, reeking up the room). However, Périn’s film often moves at a fast pace, as the plot flows seamlessly, driven by gripping and unconventional action sequences. Its dramatic reach connects the key points of a daring, intriguing film filled with mysteries akin to our cosmic consciousness.
