2D cut-out animated film directed by Israeli filmmaker Ari Folman, Where Is Anne Frank attempts to put a new spin on the already well-known story of Anne Frank. The concept is interesting: to reimagine Anne Frank’s story through the eyes of Kitty, the imaginary friend to whom Anne addressed her diary. This allows for a layer of fantasy that contrasts with the stark realism of the Jewish girl’s tragic tale. The film’s art is beautifully crafted. Certain scenes use miniature sets evocative of stop-motion, which are seamlessly integrated into the visual language. However, the 2D animation, being cut-out style, is not traditional, giving the film a sense of limited but expressive movement, reminiscent of puppets or animated collages.
Where Is Anne Frank tries to draw a connection between Anne Frank’s story during the Holocaust and the current refugee crisis, seeking parallels in themes such as injustice, displacement, and shared humanity. However, this comparison feels forced, and the film struggles to reconcile the emotional depth and suffering inherent in both situations. It is, ultimately, an unsuccessful attempt to give a classic story a socially and politically updated perspective.
