Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos returns to his old ways alongside his screenwriter, Efthymis Filippou, with a refreshing irreverence. The film unfolds in a triptych format to explore the theme of subjugation from three distinct perspectives. There are three stories—the first of which is arguably the most accomplished—featuring the same main cast playing opposing roles in different narratives, with Stone, Dafoe, and especially Plemons (the standout) shifting identities throughout. These are three tales, but one invisible film constructed on a symbolic level. Kinds of Kindness oscillates between the absurd and the unsettling, and it is precisely this quality that makes it both unique and compelling.
One of the film’s core elements is its examination of power dynamics between four individuals in different environments and situations. Each scenario escalates into extremes—bordering on paroxysm and madness—ultimately forming a grand allegory on the contradictions and paradoxes of human behavior. In essence, this is a work that invites introspection and encourages viewers to question their own daily interactions of dominance and submission—a journey through the abyssal beauty of control.
Each story is a compartment that represents a distinct sector of society, with clearly differentiated settings. All characters suffer from severe perception issues and immerse themselves in absurd desires and pursuits. Often, they don’t hesitate to use others, even inflicting harm, but their sense of morality is so eroded that they act without remorse, even with a brazen nonchalance.
