Chilean film in co-production, set in Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, at the end of the 19th century. The debut feature by Gálvez tells a story of the genocide of the Ona people, orchestrated by a sheep-farming landowner of Asturian origin from Punta Arenas (a southern city in Chile) and carried out by an English private soldier. Los Colonos venture into a sort of Latin Patagonian Western, seeking an authorial detachment from the horror portrayed in the film.
The cinematography is magnificent, favoring the vast Fuegian landscapes in stark contrast to the brutality of the indigenous massacre. The Chilean film is told in several parts, each titled according to the character or situation, giving it an educational tone. The final part brings us closer to a historical truth; however, the final metaphor strikes me as somewhat obvious, redundant, and lacking depth..
