This Moroccan-French science fiction film takes an intimate look at an alien invasion. With an introspective rhythm reminiscent of Todd Haynes' cinema, Animalia positions itself as an unconventional take on imminent extraterrestrial—or perhaps supernatural—contact. Featuring excellent casting and stunning cinematography, Alaoui's debut film delivers a remarkably dignified mise-en-scène.

The movie carries traces of Interstellar but incorporates a sociopolitical dimension by addressing themes like religion, patriarchy, social class, and more. Animalia takes a meditative journey, weaving contemplation of others' actions with the animal world as a subtle bridge to the supernatural. The film drifts through a hypnotic mist, building humanity and grounding it within the prohibitions and restrictions of Moroccan culture. It challenges our perceptions of realism and fantasy, introducing surreal and unimaginable topics rarely explored in contemporary cinema.
However, the script raises some questions, particularly regarding the protagonist's abrupt shift in mindset and perspective on her social and emotional situation. This sudden change diminishes some of the dramatic impact at a critical moment in the film.
